A lovers park is to be built in Sri Lanka by the Sri Lankan government no less, to provide a place where romantic young couples who want freedom to be together without being victimised by police.
The idea and need for this park was identified after police in two Sri Lankan towns detained nearly 200 young couples they accuse of indecent behaviour. Local conservatives had complained that the couples were kissing, cuddling or simply holding hands. Some of the couples picked on were young engaged couples, even married ones.
The new park, opening next year, will be on the banks of a river near parliament. Children will not be admitted - but other than that, there will be no strict age limits, although it will be targeted at young people. Musicians and other artists will also perform at the park.
Sri Lanka has a conservative attitude towards public displays of affection and this is a big step the government has decided to take in order to provide Sri Lankan youth today with a chance to express their feelings in a slightly more modern manner.
